Our annual event to promote distinctive young British talent together with new work for a broader dance audience. We will present you with uplifting performances, bold choreography and authentic artistry. Our dancers work with passion and energy to inspire our audiences’ imaginations and arouse their senses far beyond the visual experience.

Classically British 2017 continues to cross boundaries and this year’s dance genres will embrace Classical Ballet, Flamenco, Contemporary and Street. Three of our featured artists are:

Nathan Geering – an internationally acclaimed Street performer who uses the emotional and physical settings in his pioneering work

Yinka Esi Graves – a former Portobello Dance student who uniquely explores the links between flamenco and other dance forms in her performance

Joey Barton – a very talented dancer from the Rambert School. We are excited to show his work as he starts out on promising and ascending career path

We are proud to be performing during Black History Month, and share their ambitions and values with our own event and heritage. We believe that inclusiveness advances humanity and our show reflects and celebrates the diversities in dance cultures. We feel dance can helps us all to understand this important life message, as well as to have perspective and hope in these challenging times.

On Friday afternoon of October 20 local schools and colleges are very welcome to an interactive event that includes: The dress rehearsal; a retrospective of Black dance pioneers and an open mic Q&A session. The students afternoon starts at 1.15pm and tickets £5 are available via your School / College contact.

20th Anniversary Exhibition and Auction

July saw an exciting event in the history of Portobello Dance School.
The Mark Elie Dance Foundation staged an exhibition to celebrate its 20th anniversary at The Tabernacle, Notting Hill. The event was attended by many, including the Mayor of Kensington & Chelsea.

Artistic Director, Mark Elie outlined the charity's vision to provide affordable, yet top quality dance tuition for all, providing dance trainers and guests as student role models. Part of its mission is to encourage ballet dancers, especially those of ethnic minorities to enter the mainstream stage. This has been the motivation behind Classically British events, an annual showcase held during Black History Season, staged for both schoolchildren and adult audiences. Here's an extract from the speech:

"We are living at a time when young people face many pressures and distraction that inhibit an ability to cultivate a personal identity that is rooted in self-awareness and self-confidence ... I know from my own personal experience that exposing young people to art and culture at an early age can provide them with the building blocks to establishing successful and value creative lives as adults."

A highly spirited photo auction helped raise funds for the Mark Elie Dance Foundation, a registered charity.

See more images from the event on Facebook.

Celebrating our 20th in 2014!

This year, we are celebrating two decades of our popular dance school, providing affordable Saturday classes in West London.

Back in 1994, the Mark Elie Dance School began to encourage Ballet training for Notting Hill's diverse population, offering diversity in trainers. It promoted optional exams in classical ballet and outreach classes. Shining students were introduced to advanced training and mainstream performance.

Today, Portobello Dance School is a destination dance school attracting a large number of students from across the capital, training in Ballet, Tap and Street. Portobello Dance also continues to deliver 'Classically British', an increasingly exciting event of diverse dancers with classical training.

Artistic Director, Mark Elie is excited about the future of the dance school, which still remains part of the Mark Elie Dance Foundation, the registered charity set up in 1994 to provide affordable dance.

Keep posted for special anniversary events. In the meantime, for a touch of nostalgia check out the Ballet school beginnings video.
